Iñigo Arzalluz es un mod «tardío» que no aparenta 40 años. Sentado en una de las mesas de su bar, el Art café de Amara, reconoce que llegó a la cultura mod a través de la música indie -«siempre digo que del mod al indie hay un paso, es cuestión de investigar en las influencias de los grupos»- y empezamos a reparar en el mobiliario de clara influencia british que nos rodea. «El empapelado de estilo retro no es original pero nos gustaba y lo trajimos. El hammond es de una amiga que nos lo regaló. Lo tenía en casa y le hicimos un favor aprovechando que hacía una mudanza».
Sobre la pared blanca llama la atención un cuadro de colores muy vivos que reproduce una escena de la carismática película mod «Quadrophenia«. En la entrada también hay otras imágenes de Jimmy con su cuadrilla de Faces, una placa que pone «Abbey Road», un disco de los Beatles… La música desempeña un papel fundamental, no hay duda. En estos momentos suena soul pero también suele haber otros subgéneros asociados al estilo mod (rythm and blues, boogaloo, latin-jazz, northern soul) y rock clásico tipo Neil Young, más del gusto del socio de Iñigo, Igor Azkona, «de la cuadrilla de Errenteria de toda la vida».
Pero al Art Café, ubicado a un paso de Anoeta (calle Illunbe, 9), no siempre ha sido así. Ha pasado por distintas fases hasta llegar a convertirse en la cafetería modernista de barrio que es ahora. Hace unos 15 años Íñigo entró como empleado y cuando el antiguo propietario se marchó Igor le ofreció que llevaran juntos las riendas del negocio. «Era mayor que nosotros, con muchos años de experiencia en el mundo de la hostelería, y tenía un punto de vista distinto al nuestro. No tenía nada que ver. Igor y yo llevamos un rollo más similar y fue sencillo buscar puntos en común».
Al principio, la cafetería alternó sus funciones con las de una sala de exposiciones y todos los meses distintos artistas de la ciudad y alrededores mostraban sus trabajos. Así fue durante unos cinco años. «¿Qué pasó? Que la gente no se comprometía. No había demasiada seriedad y teníamos que andar detrás de los artistas para que cumpliesen con las fechas. Nos acabamos cansando». Han mantenido cierto aire literario y bohemio con una pequeña balda de libros que está a disposición de los clientes. Abren de siete y media de la mañana a diez de la noche y disponen de un público fiel, en su mayoría vecinos, a quienes Iñigo saludo con cariño durante nuestra conversación. La afluencia se multiplica los días que hay partido de la Real, como anoche contra el Bayer.
Se echa en falta, eso sí, unos platos de DJ, teniendo en cuenta que Iñigo también ejerce de pinchadiscos en su tiempo libre en bares como el Eiger, Bukowski, etc. «Alguna vez he pensado en comprar unos platos y montar unos alldayers (sesiones de música diurnas) pero, no sé, luego la gente es muy perezosa para moverse hasta aquí y nunca he dado el paso», argumenta.

Gracias esto es más que un bar es mejor que rockola que el huerto y incluso que club 44 nuestra dinastía de los 80 felicidaďes lo hacéis muy bien.

Lo de «tardío» nos lo dijo el propio Iñigo Art, Mr. Bojangles. Pero vamos, que es un detalle sin importancia.XD
Iñigo es el MOD por referencia…Eso se lleva desde siempre..
Es más que un bar. Es una casa con propietarios increíblemente agradables siempre. Llevamos como 10 años con ellos y nunca han faltado las risas ni el buen estar. Aparte de un exquisito y agtadable gusto por la música! Son gebiales todos, cada unos con su pedrada!
Por fin se hace justicia a este maravilloso bar; gran variedad de cervezas de barril, a precios muy asequibles, su tortilla de patata es espectacular, la música genial, y de la gente al otro lado de la barra que más se puede decir: son el secreto del éxito. Merece una mención especial Leire, que es la alegría de la huerta.
Bien, pero: «Gran fallo no hacer mención al super camarero Jose Luis (más conocido como el panadero del rock), que ha dado mucha vida al garito».
